A website dedicated to publishing first-hand accounts of the Hong Kong pro-democracy movement has warned its users to prepare for large-scale internet blocks, filters, and censorship in future, in the first indication that China may be exporting its Great Firewall to the city under a draconian national security law that took effect on July 1.
The HKChronicles website started receiving reports from users based in Hong Kong that they were no longer able to access the site late on Jan. 6, the site s founder and chief editor Naomi Chan said in a statement.

One of the 53 people arrested in Hong Kong on Wednesday, the American lawyer John Clancey, has been released without charge pending further inquiries.
Police were expected to begin releasing the remaining detainees yesterday, local media reported, after an unprecedented roundup of politicians, campaigners and activists over accusations that their holding of a democratic poll breached Hong Kong’s National Security Law imposed by Beijing.

The mass arrests in Hong Kong and the storming of the US Capitol in Washington “remind us once again of the preciousness and fragility of the democratic system,” Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Chairman Johnny Chiang (江啟臣) said yesterday.
“Whether it is people’s violent obstruction of the parliamentary review process or the government’s arrest of pro-democracy figures, they are blows to democratic values,” he said in a statement on Facebook.
