HCC receives $34k grant for summer bridge program

Hopkinsville, KY, USA / WHOP 1230 AM | News Radio May 6, 2021 9:20 AM A $34,000 grant has been announced by the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education to support a Summer Bridge program at Hopkinsville Community College. A news release says the program is targeted to high school students who graduated in Spring 2020 or are graduating in Spring 2021. According to HCC Chief Institutional Advancement Officer Yvette Eastham, the grant’s focus is on preparedness, academics, transition to college and assistance. The inaugural, no-fee program will begin on July 12 and run through August 6, Monday – Thursday, narrowing the gap between the bridge program and the start of fall classes on August 16.

EDC, HCC partnering to host virtual roadshow | WHOP 1230 AM

Hopkinsville, KY, USA / WHOP 1230 AM | News Radio May 3, 2021 4:39 PM The South Western Kentucky Economic Development Council has announced that the Kentucky Association of Manufacturers will be hosting a virtual roadshow on May 11 focused on issues of interest to regional manufacturers. The virtual event is a partnership between Hopkinsville Community College and the KCTCS system, along with Advantage Kentucky Alliance and the SWK EDC as a co-sponsor. Agenda topics include workforce and recruitment, supply chain strategies, legislative advocacy to help manufacturers, local opportunities, and a virtual tour of HCC’s campus to learn more about the workforce opportunities being provided by the institution.

Dr Young Receives Passing Evaluation From HCC Board

Dr. Alissa Young The Hopkinsville Community College board of directors presented College President Dr. Alissa Young with a positive evaluation during Monday afternoon’s meeting. Board chair Richard Nelson told Dr. Young she met or exceeded expectations in 11 out of 13 areas covered in the evaluation. Nelson shared the areas the board is requesting her to work on. Nelson added during the board self-evaluation, there was one area they felt they needed to improve upon. That included board involvement in the strategic planning process and being updated on the progress with regard to planning and priorities. The board also learned that the college had 621 students fewer than the 2020 Spring semester. Chief Student Affairs Officer Angel Prescott said they did have some good news, as there was a more than a three-percent increase in student retention from the fall to spring semester.

HCC Students Graduating This Weekend

Commencement for Hopkinsville Community College students will take place this weekend. College President Dr. Alissa Young told the board of directors they would break them into three different ceremonies to follow COVID-19 protocols in the school’s auditorium. She said the first ceremony Friday night would be for Allied Health and Nursing programs. Young added the other ceremonies would follow Saturday.
