For most enterprise-level organizations, 2020 was a stress test on their resiliency and agility in the wake of disruption. In fact, in a recent report from Harvard Business Review Analytic Services, 53% of executives said that improving business continuity and resiliency is now their primary business goal, an increase of 33% prior to COVID-19.
Those organizations that fared best amidst disruption were committed to digital transformation efforts that embraced dual-track strategies (top-down and bottom-up). The crucial factor here? CIOs who understand how to best introduce new technologies that streamline unproductive processes, freeing up employees to focus on the big picture, and allowing for increased, democratized innovation.

The COVID-19 pandemic reset business expectations in a monumental way – and elevated the role of CIOs who led strong responses to the immediate crisis. Those CIOs now find themselves with amplified influence, according to new research from Harvard Business Review Analytic Services.
The crisis, for all of its challenges, shattered previous notions of what was and wasn t possible, liberating CIOs to do things in new ways.
“The crisis, for all of its challenges, shattered previous notions of what was and wasn’t possible, liberating CIOs to do things in new ways. Organizations in general, and CIOs specifically, are operating under new rules for the next normal,” the report states.
In recent years, digital transformation has emerged as a vital imperative and recent months have only added a new level of urgency around these initiatives. In fact, I’d argue those organizations that have been leading the way in this transformation are not only much better equipped to adapt to the fundamentally altered, pandemic-disrupted landscape we find ourselves in now but to establish a strong competitive position that persists in the long term.
When it comes to the execution of digital strategies, internal technology teams are either leading the way or key supporters. Given the critical role these teams play, it s more important than ever that IT investments are fully and optimally aligned with key business objectives. However, that’s simply not the case in a vast majority of organizations.
