Former Arizona AG Leads Effort To Rid Dark Money From Elections

Former Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard is on his third attempt to rid elections of so-called “dark money,” this time by changing state election laws.  In current law, people who directly donate more than $50 to a candidate or initiative campaign must publicly disclose who they are. But there is no such disclosure law for those who donate to third party entities working on behalf of a candidate or initiative.  This new initiative Goddard is trying to put on the Arizona ballot, if passed, would require the public disclosure of the true source of donations of more than $5,000 spent by organizations in support of, or opposing, any candidate or ballot measure. Current law exempts these social welfare organizations from having to list their contributors.

ADE Allocating $16 Million In COVID-19 Relief Funds To Various Initiatives

The Arizona Department of Education is allocating an additional $16 million of its discretionary COVID-19 relief funds, it announced Tuesday. The money is part of the $135.5 million in discretionary funds that the department received from two federal COVID-19 relief packages. With these new allocations, the department has now allocated $116 million of these funds.  The $16 million will be invested into efforts focused on student equity and achievement, teacher recruitment and retention, and college access and attainment. This includes a partnership on an ASU summer math program for K-12 students, and a laptop and hotspot partnership with the city of Phoenix.

GOP Party Attorneys Ask Judge To Dismiss Case Of Party Politics

A Maricopa County Superior Court judge will soon decide if a group of dissatisfied Arizona Republicans can continue a legal challenge against leaders of the state Republican Party. Republicans Bill Beard and Sandra Dowling say that Republican Party Chair Kelli Ward refuses to acknowledge that enough signatures were gathered to call for a meeting of the state committee that’s the roughly 1,400 Republican activists in the Arizona GOP. A hearing is scheduled for May 18 to determine if enough valid signatures were collected. But first, attorneys for the Arizona Republican Party have asked Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Michael Kemp to dismiss the case.

A Republican state senator broke ranks and voted against a GOP-backed bill that could remove tens of thousands of voters from the state’s early ballot mailing list. Sen. Kelly Townsend (R-Mesa) voted twice earlier this year for Senate Bill 1485, which would remove voters from the state’s popular Permanent Early Voting List a list of voters who are automatically mailed ballots for every election in which they’re eligible to vote  if they don’t use their early ballot at least once in two straight two-year election cycles.
