Bhubaneshwar: Over the past three to four days, a large number of people have been lining up outside the regional office of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in Bhubaneswar to swap Rs 2,000 notes, Indian Express reported.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said in a circular on Wednesday that it has received over 97 per cent of Rs 2,000 notes, however, notes worth Rs 10,000 crore are still with public. This year in May, the bank had officially announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes.

People are requested to avail the facility of sending Rs 2,000 banknotes through post offices of India Post, the RBI said, adding that this will obviate the need for travel to RBI offices for deposit or exchange of the currency.

RBI has also clarified that Rs 2,000 notes will continue to be accepted at banks and other financial institutions for deposit into bank accounts till October 7

Reserve Bank Governor Shaktikanta Das announced that 87% of the Rs 2,000 denomination notes being withdrawn have been returned as bank deposits, while the rest has been exchanged. He also stated that Rs 12,000 crore worth of Rs 2,000 notes are yet to come back. The RBI is focusing on the 4% inflation target and will maintain an actively disinflationary monetary policy until inflation decreases. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has extended the deadline for exchanging Rs 2,000 notes until October 7, 2023. According to the RBI, about 96% of the Rs 2,000 banknotes have been returned to the banking system since the decision to withdraw the note from circulation. Starting from October 8, all branches will cease the procedure for exchange or deposit of the currency.

Courts, law enforcement agencies, government departments, or other public authorities involved in investigations or enforcement can deposit or exchange Rs 2000 banknotes at any of the 19 RBI Issue Offices without any set limit.

2000 note exchange: Deadline ends in 3 days: On May 19th the Reserve Bank of India ordered the withdrawal of Rs 2000 rupee notes and asked the people to deposit the notes in the bank before September 30th.
