Mumbai, Jan 1 (PTI) The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Monday said that nearly 97.38 per cent of the Rs 2,000 bank notes have been returned to the banking system, and only about Rs 9,330 crore worth of the notes are still with the public.

On May 19, the RBI announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 denomination bank notes from circulation.

The window for deposit and exchange of Rs 2,000 banknotes remains open at RBI's 19 Issue offices.

Following this trend, Regional Director Reserve Bank of India Sarada Prasana Mohanty told ANI, "Daily 700 people are coming to the RBI to exchange their Rs 2000 notes. Rs 2,000 notes worth 1 to 1.5 crore has been exchanged by the RBI each day. If any investigative agencies want any documents, RBI will provide the same." People can now send their Rs 2,000 banknotes to regional offices of RBI via insured post for direct credit in their bank accounts, providing convenience for those unable to visit in person. RBI offers a Triple Lock Receptacle (TLR) form for deposits. The options are secure and eliminate the need to travel to designated branches and stand in queues.
