Its what we call the ground moving sideways. one side of the fault is close to the other, and its the same thing we worry about with los angeles, san francisco, even seattle has same kind of faults. the shallow faults are close to the surface, and because theyre close, they shake the ground more, and they can get very strong shaking that lasts 10-20 second. its hard to build for that, and we know for experience haitis buildings dont perform well under that test. eric: this was a 7.2, 6 miles dee...

One thing to note when you talk about the population that felt the main quake, over a half million people had severe shaking, half million people that felt very strong, and 4 million felt moderate shaking. you can see the damage videos and photos coming in of the structural damage taking place. one key thing to note is that a lot of buildings are sturly compromised. when you get aftershocks, buildings that dont look like they have damage could sustain damage going down because of the aftershocks...
