India’s leading operator Reliance Jio is now the worlds largest mobile operator in terms of data traffic consumption, overtaking China Mobile.

Gopal Vittal, CEO & MD, Bharti Airtel, recently said more applications are required to be written on 5G networks which really use the benefit of this technology. “Unfortunately this is not the case, not just in India, but in no market anywhere in the world. With the exception of some private 5G networks and some B2B use cases which have modest revenue streams associated with it, fundamental use cases are still not there.”

Reliance Jio: "It is not a question of monetizing 5G. Today with 1.1 million 5G cells in India, and almost 88% of that being delivered by Jio, we are the largest 5G SA network in the world."

5G fixed wireless access and the enterprise segment hold promise, but they come with riders. Scaling services and addressing the affordability gap are the key challenges that telecom companies have to overcome.

Bharti Airtel: “During 2QFY24, we expect steady growth of 3-4% QoQ for Bharti/Jio, with strong subscriber additions for Jio and stable additions for Bharti and a 2% QoQ ARPU growth for Bharti/Jio,” analysts at Jefferies have said.

According to analysts at JM Financial, the industry continues to struggle with the development of any exclusive use cases of 5G apart from 5G FWA. Though with 5G FWA as well, monetisation is likely to be gradual with limited penetration amidst the absence of killer use cases.

Vodafone Idea: Khurana said that enterprise as a segment has become very important for Indian telecom operators, and with 5G, their importance will only increase.

While 5G-specifi c tariffs are still a few quarters away, Airtel has made some efforts towards 5G monetisation with its fi xed wireless access (FWA) offering announced earlier this month, and Jio is expected to follow suit soon. ET takes a look at the extent of the 5G rollouts in India so far.
