Amid internal dissension, UAW is moving toward a more militant, democratic approach to upcoming contract negotiations.

DETROIT—In his first speech as the union’s first-ever popularly elected president, FiatChrysler/ Stellantis worker Shawn Fain signaled the United Auto Workers would have a more militant attitude towards the Detroit 3 when contract talks begin this year.

In a roughly eight-minute speech, Fain sought to put election behind the union and chart a path toward unity ahead of contract talks with automakers.
