the fbi is the lead agency investigating this case and scheduled to hold a press conference in el paso this afternoon. ed lavandera in el paso, thanks very much. we learned this morning that department of justice is looking into who gets into harvard and why. dot university s admission policies discriminate against asian americans. justice reporter laura jarrett has the details. this is an interesting suit. this is shaping up to potentially be the first major legal batter over affirmative action during the trump administration. according to a set of letters i obtained this morning, the justice department sent harvard last week makes it clear not only is the school under investigation for its admission policies but doj is threatening to sue the school if it doesn t turn over records by late next week. now the justice department s interest in harvard s policy stems from a 2015 federal complaint that accuses the school of discriminating against
benefit and require that race be considered as one of many factors in college admission decisions. and we understand that our i think that the evidence is going to demonstrate very clearly that harvard s admission policies are working to assemble an integrated learning virn m environment that is more reflective of the world that the students are living. and whatever happened to good grades and being a volunteer or having a summer job and a couple great letters of reference? doesn t that matter? well, those matter, grades and test scores and references still matter. but there is an awful lot of the entering class at elite universities that have other factors going for them which i described in my book, i call them the preferences of privilege. preferences i mention for alumni children and others. when you combine those with affirmative action, it s proiblt
reporter who broke this story tonight. mr. savage, thanks for your time. this directive that s coming out to switch sides on affirmative action, it talks about going after universities. in your reporting, are there specific universities in mind or are they talking about actually suing colleges and universities over their policies? they re definitely talking about suing colleges and universities, but they re also talking about first investigating them. that could have a chilling effect as the universities don t want the weight of the justice department brought against them. i don t think they ve gotten far enough to identify specific targets. what they re trying to do is staff up for the project. they re looking for people already working for the justice department s civil rights division who would like to go after universities and colleges based on race-based admission policies, affirmative action, but they haven t picked those people yet. and one of the interesting things about this
