Fossil fuel giant Shell hopes to do a seismic survey off South Africa's pristine Wild Coast. But activists are protesting it, saying it will harm the environment and wildlife.

Judge Gerald Bloem on Tuesday morning interdicted Shell from continuing with the survey which started on December 2.

While Wild Coast residents and activists mark a ‘significant’ triumph after the high court ordered Shell to stop its seismic survey immediately, the judgment is likely to trigger a flood of lawsuits against the global fossil fuel industry.

The courts have become the battleground for environmental activists, who are trying to stop Shell’s exploration along the Wild Coast.

Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe has been blasted in court for his support for the controversial undersea oil and gas exploration by Dutch conglomerate, Shell.
