MUMBAI: The state cabinet on Wednesday approved the renaming of Ahmednagar city as well as the district as Ahilyanagar.

The renaming of the bridge after the Hindutva icon comes amid a slew of measures the Eknath Shinde government took in the past year. Ahmednagar has been renamed Ahilyanagar after Maratha queen Ahilya Devi Holkar. Aurangabad was renamed after Chhatrapati Shivajis eldest son, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar. Similarly, Osmanabad was renamed Dharashiv. Versova-Bandra Sea Link Renamed As Veer Savarkar Setu, Says Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde.

Clothes With A Conscience

In August, the Maharashtra Assembly had passed resolutions to rename Aurangabad as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and Osmanabad as Dharashiv.

Jawaharlal Nehru described Holkar’s rule as “almost legendary as a period during which perfect order and good government prevailed and the people prospered. She was a very able ruler and organizer, highly respected during her lifetime.”

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday announced that the state government has decided to name Ahmednagar district after Queen Ahilya Devi Holkar.

Lakshman Singh, the five-time Lok Sabha member and three-term legislator, is the younger brother of Congress veteran Digvijaya Singh.

"We see the goddess in women. But (with) the kind of bad dresses the girls wear and move around, they do not embody the goddess but look like 'Shurpanakha'. God has given you a good and beautiful body.....dress well, friends," Kailash Vijayvargiya had said.
