The Perry Police Department says a suspect fired multiple rounds from what appeared to be an AR15 style weapon and then fled the scene in a white Dodge.

The dogs were riding in the back of the pickup truck and ended up passing away.

"Really we just want you to slow down," Perry Police Chief Alan Everidge said. "We're not here to get revenue. We just want people to slow down and be safe in school zones. Our future is going in and out of those doors, and we wanna make sure that they're safe."

Everidge says his first main goal is to address mental health with a faster, better response

In 1987, before working in Perry, served in the patrol and traffic divisions with the Houston County Sheriff's Office.
