Longtime talent buyer Alex Pickert spent years in Greater Boston’s DIY scenes before creating NICE, a fest. Now in its third year, the festival has expanded to include more bands and genres.

Opening May 20, Deep Cuts will feed Boston’s growing appetite for more small and midsize music venues. That’s been a goal for co-owner Ian McGregor since the closing of Allston’s Great Scott in 2020, a place he frequented.

The 240-person live music space, restaurant, and brewery is set to open next month at 21 Main St. in Medford.

The locally-minded NICE, a fest returns in July with 74 bands and artists performing across multiple Somerville stages.

Rappers Cousin Stizz and BIA confirmed their hometown hero status, and Best New Artist kei had a breakout night.
