A man awaiting trial for an alleged violent crime spree in Seattle was finally admitted to Western State Hospital after nearly a year in jail. The delay, due to a lack of inpatient beds, will cost taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars.

Alexander Jay waited nearly a year to be transported from jail to a state psychiatric hospital, and the wait is in violation of state law and court orders.

Hundreds of people across the state sit in jail waiting for mental health services from the state, and now officials with the Department of Social and Health Services say they may have to start refusing some patients.

In a motion, the county said it is incurring “unnecessary costs” by housing a seriously mentally ill defendant.

King County is asking to be reimbursed by the state for housing inmate Alexander Jay, who has been at King County Jail waiting for court-ordered mental health treatment for nearly eight months.
