In Guinea, 8 months after the start of the Conakry trial, some lawyers have never been paid. On May 29, they went on strike.

Thirteen years to the day after the Conakry stadium massacre, the trial of the alleged perpetrators is scheduled to begin this Wednesday, September 28. In 2009, the crackdown on protesters left at least 156 people dead. More than one hundred women were raped. This is a challenge for the country's justice system and the culmination of an uneven process. It is also a political opportunity for the head of the military junta, whose regime has recently tightened up.

Two leaders of a collective that organised demonstrations that left five people dead, according to the justice minister, were charged and imprisoned after appearing on Monday before an examining magistrate at a court in the suburbs of Conakry.

Guinea said Wednesday it would prosecute former president Alpha Conde, who was toppled in a military coup last September, for murder and other crimes committed during his time in office.

Aplha Conde is among 27 former senior officials who face prosecution for murder, assassination and complicity, according to a document given to journalists by prosecutor Alphonse Charles Wright.
