South Korean police investigate altered image of 'opposition leader in jail' ahead of polls

South Korean police launched an investigation into potential unlawful election campaigning after an altered image that appeared to show opposition leader Lee Jae-myung in prison was distributed in central Seoul ahead of polls on April 10. The image -- which also circulated in Facebook groups with tens of thousands of members -- added Lee's head to a photo of a mannequin in a mock prison cell.

Old photo of Bangladesh police raid on cannabis farm misleadingly linked to ruling party

An old photo of a cannabis farm raided by Bangladesh police in 2020 has resurfaced in social media posts that altered the image to include a signboard falsely linking the site to the ruling Awami League party. The signboard falsely claims the farm was named after Bangladesh’s founder -- the father of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina -- and supplies to members of the ruling party. Local police told AFP they did not find any such signboard during the 2020 operation.

Yemen's Huthi rebels have been targeting Red Sea shipping since November 2023, triggering US and British reprisals, but an image repeatedly shared online appearing to show vessels exchanging missile fire is actually manipulated. Old altered image of late South Korean president falsely shared as 2024 'tsunami victim'

A doctored image was shared repeatedly in Korean-language social media posts falsely claiming it shows a victim of a tsunami triggered by the 7.5-magnitude earthquake which struck Japan in January 2024. The altered image has circulated since at least 2017, and is in fact a composite photo of the late South Korean president Roh Moo-hyun falling off a sled and a picture of a stream in Busan, a city in the southern part of the South Korea.

Altered photo does not show Kenyan opposition leader crowned at Nigerian festival

A photo has been shared on social media alongside a claim that it shows Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga being crowned as an “elder” at the Osun-Osogbo festival in Nigeria. But the image has been digitally altered: the original picture was taken more than four decades ago and shows the coronation of Jean-Bedel Bokassa, the former Central African Republic leader who declared himself emperor. His face was replaced by Odinga’s.
