Discord shows off Stages discoverability features, push for inclusivity ); }
Today online communications platform Discord rolled out a new set of features and company strategy showcasing a new (but familiar) direction after a year of pandemic-adjacent growth.
In a press conference held on Discord earlier this week, CEO and co-founder Jason Citron and colleagues used the new “Stage Channels” feature to announce the tweaked direction. The company reported that as of 2021, 78 percent of Discord users reported using the platform for non-game purposes, hosting communities based on gardening, book clubs, comedy clubs and more.
(Some context: Discord does say that number is a combination of users who say they use it exclusively for non-game purposes, and users who use it equally for gaming and non-game purposes.)
Live games have once again pushed EA to beat internal expectations as standout performance from titles like
Apex Legends,
Madden NFL, and The Sims 4 lead the company to a record year. EA reported $6.19 billion in net bookings for the year ending March 31, 2021, a whole $600 million above the company s full-year projections. Net income for the full year, meanwhile, came to $837 million.
EA CEO Andrew Wilson says the company s sizable (and ever-growing) catalog of live games and services is to thank for that record year, and those same games are expected to keep pushing the company forward in the year to come.
Microsoft wants feedback on a limited lottery to help sell Xbox Series X|S consoles ); }
It s been difficult for most folks to get their hands on the latest generation of game consoles, but Xbox is hoping to make the process a little less intensive for a select subset of people that already own an Xbox One console.
However, the focus of this new program is deliberately very narrow on Microsoft s part as the company looks to solicit feedback on an unusual purchasing method.
Microsoft calls the new program the Console Purchase Pilot, and angles it as a sort of lottery a small subset of existing Xbox customers can use to potentially land a chance at purchasing an Xbox Series X|S console.
