After a three-day trial this week, Monte Michael Stokes — a 38-year-old stranger to the couple — was convicted of murdering 51-year-old Eduardo Amezcua in his living room as his wife watched. A jury recommended he serve 35 years in prison.

A Newport News judge Friday sentenced a man to 56 years behind bars in a killing two years ago in which more than 40 shots were fired.

A preliminary hearing was held Friday for Asron Marquis Sellers, of Newport News, who is charged with first-degree murder in the Jan. 25 killing of 38-year-old Brian Fonville. Sellers is also accused of shooting and injuring a transgender woman in Hampton just days before.
