Evansville's Grace of Christ Church raises money for Ukrainians facing war

VANDERBURGH COUNTY, Ind. (WEHT) -- The Grace of Christ Church -- located near the Washington Avenue and Highway 41 intersection -- is gathering people for its Ukrainian Spring Fest and raising money for Ukrainians facing war. Community members met at the Christian Fellowship Church on Millersburg Road on Saturday afternoon to snack on Ukrainian dishes and desserts. The proceeds are going to support Mission Ukraine, where people facing the war will be able to buy supplies and pay for evacuation if needed. Eyewitness News spoke with Victoria Mayatskiy who has been able to keep in touch with her friends in the city of Kharkiv, where the war is heavily hit. "Sometimes they just have to cry it out and just go on with their life -- go to work and do stuff, usual stuff, because they're still alive and they're blessed to be alive," Mayatskiy says. "But they do realize that later their last day might come just because they live in that spot." Other opportunities are coming up to support Mission Ukraine. Eyewitness News is told Mission Ukraine will have its food truck on Monday at Wesselman Park during the total eclipse festivities. We are told Mission Ukraine will be out again between May 2 and May 4 at the Catalyst Church's "Taste of the Fest" event on Claremont Avenue.

Volunteers clean up K9 cemetery following Tuesday's Tri-State storms

VANDERBURGH COUNTY, Ind. (WEHT) -- Tuesday's storms wrecked plenty of areas across the Tri-State, and the K9 cemetery located at the FOP PAL Park off Happe Road is no different. Countless volunteers -- including staff at the Southern Indiana Police Canine Association (SIPCA) -- spent Saturday morning cleaning up the cemetery and giving back to the 60 dogs buried on the property. For police K9s across the Evansville region, this is where dogs are laid to rest and where years of service are remembered. Lauren Montgomery is just one of the people cleaning up. Her husband is a former EPD K-9 handler, and the family has two dogs buried at the cemetery. "These dogs are a part of our family for many years. This is where they train, and this is where their final resting place is," Montgomery says. "Just like any cemetery with a family member, it's a nice place to come and remember them." For some others, they just wanted to come help serve their community, like Nolan Eickhoff -- a German Township firefighter -- and James Daily -- a business owner. "I think it's important because these canines -- they help the community and help save lives," Eickhoff says. "It's just nice keep them clean after they pass." "I try to give back whenever I can, and somebody told me that they needed some help out here this morning. So, I got up and came out to help out," Daily says. "The canines -- they deserve a nice, clean resting place, and EPD needed some help. We came to help." The clean-up also comes as SIPCA is hoping to add more space for the area police K9s. In addition to more space, staff want to add paths in the cemetery as well. Learn more about the cemetery project.
