The native people of the Arctic Circle are highlighting their controversial past from this weekend

The Sámi Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale is featuring three Sámi artists and establishing an official space for international Indigenous artists.

At an event usually organized along national lines, artists from the Indigenous Sámi people of the Arctic Circle will have their own pavilion.

The Sámi Pavilion comes at a critical juncture, with Truth and Reconciliation Commissions addressing Nordic colonialism underway in Norway and Finland.

A landmark international gathering focused on Indigenous topics will take place in April in honor of the first-ever Sámi Pavilion.
