A group of gymnastics supporters are suing the Sioux Falls School District over its final decision in July to adopt a budget that cut gymnastics funding.

The school district-sponsored gymnastics program in Sioux Falls was on unsteady ground heading into the summer break. For a few dozen young gymnasts, the axe has officially fallen on their team.

Young gymnasts competing for the Sioux Falls School District will likely need to find a new place to perform. The board says balancing the needs of a small student population in the budget is a challenge.

Gymnastics was budgeted at $76,094. The sport had a headcount of 58 athletes last school year, according to the district’s count.

Monday night, the Sioux Falls School Board tentatively voted to adopt the budget for the next school year, which includes cutting gymnastics.

It was standing room only at the Sioux Falls School Board meeting Monday night as supporters of the district's gymnastics program showed up in droves.
