at guantanamo. the former general council for the pentagon, jeh johnson, is here to talk about that and more, as well. a lot going on. today in congress, a senior official at the irs took the fifth and refused to answer questions from congress, while the george w. bush appointed commissioner of the irs, who left his job in november, but who was there through the whole conservative group s targeting scandal, he did answer questions and got lam basted by both republicans and democrats. also today, the city of chicago announced they are going to be closing 50 schools in the city. that is the largest mass public school closing in u.s. history. chicago says the schools are underutilized, they want to consolidate the school district, but as you can see from this footage, a lot of the protesters in the city say otherwise. in the city of new york today, anthony weiner, who left congress because he got caught distributing lewd photos of himself on twitter and then
the jurors deciding her fate are back in the courtroom right now in phoenix. and we ll hear from jodi arias herself though she may not necessarily take the stand. ted rowlands is covering the penalty phase of this trial, the final phase of the trial. ted, arias i understand she could go before the jury, answer questions. or she might just release a statement, is that right? well, she could go into the witness box. that s one of her options is to actually take the stand under oath. if she does that, her lawyer can sort of guide her through her history, childhood, all the rest of it. all the points they want to bring up. the downside to that is that juan martinez then gets to go after her, the prosecutor in this matter. her other option is just to make a statement to the jury, that is likely what we re going to see at some point today. first, we re going to hear from at least one of her friends, if you will. an individual she dated at one
tonight the satisfaction for the people in that area and for boston and for america, the bomber in custody and alive at the moment. we don t know the extent of his injuries. we ll try to find out more. fran townsend, i believe you re with us now. national security correspondent for cnn. in terms of the fact that this has happened within four days, fran, this has to be considered a big success for the fbi. reporter: absolutely. it s a tremendous success. and i think what you heard at that press conference is them saying it was actually it s a team success. you really you needed the watertown police and the boston police, no one agency could have done it on their own. but the fbi gets tremendous credit. look, they re going to have to answer real questions, though. today we re very happy that this has been brought to the conclusion. but they re going to have answer questions. a foreign government, i suspect the russian government, gave them a lead two years ago to go and talk to the
questions. he can simply say with or without miranda, i m not answering the questions. so we don t know whether he will answer questions. if he does answer questions, it is not clear whether those statements can be used against him. they can be used for leads to identify other threats to public safety. there s no question about that. the legally ambiguous situation is whether any statements he makes without miranda could be used against him if and when he goes to trial. and paul, i guess the question off of what jeff is saying seems to be that right now that they are not sure. they had other people they were questioning today. they re not sure if there was anyone else who possibly could have been involved directly. therefore, that s why they would use the public safety exception. and once they could ascertain that that was not the case, then they would go ahead and do this through miranda right, right? yeah. i also wanted to touch on what i think is the biggest public misconception
intimidation. and my gut feeling, i think the cabinet is good with this, that we go forward with our work. that s the kind of thing that tom would have understood, i think, and would have supported. so we expect to sign the bills, answer questions, and try to continue to move this state forward. all right. we re going to break away from news conference. this is colorado s governor john hickenlooper. he was talking about the murder last night of tom clements, the chief of all of colorado s prisons. mr. clements, according to police, sheriff s deputies, rather, there was a knock on his door last night at his colorado springs home. he answered the door and somebody shot him in the chest. a family member was at home at the time, but saw nothing. police are still looking for a suspect. they do believe the suspect has left that neighborhood right now. you heard just a little bit of the governor talking about this landmark gun control legislation he s about to sign into this law
