A.I. researchers have made an interactive portrait that responds to the viewer with uncannily humanlike emotions and movements.

Art restoration is a discipline that combines passion, patience and resourcefulness. And it is benefitting more and more from the latest technological advances, especially in terms of artificial intelligence.

2.09.2022 - Using X-rays, artificial intelligence and 3D printing, two UCL researchers reproduced a lost work of art by renowned Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh, 135 years after he painted over it.

The team trained a neural network on other examples of the artists' works, teaching it to accurately reconstruct from an X-ray-style image.

Neuroscientist Anthony Bourached and physicist George Cann worked alongside mathematician Jesper Eriksson to produce the re-creation (pictured).

This is not the first time that art experts have made extraordinary findings in the works of the famous artist. Using X-rays, one expert discovered a hidden painting under the 1903 masterpiece "The Blind Mans Meal". Last year, two doctoral researchers used AI to recreate the hidden painting dubbed "The Lonesome Crouching Nude".

As artists and AI experts come together, they are creating artworks that are beyond traditional definitions.

The one-off replica of Picassos The Lonesome Crouching Nude will ensure the work is no longer erased from history, the team from University College London said.
