Achintya Sharma had left New York City to attend his father’s funeral in New Delhi, India, when President Joe Biden announced a ban on travel from India to reduce the spread of a COVID-19 variant. This left Sharma and hundreds of other Indian people working in the U.S. stranded in India after they traveled for pandemic-related family emergencies. Siva, from Princeton, New Jersey, hasn’t seen his wife since she visited India to take care of her mother in February. A change.org petition has over 8,700 signatures to ask the federal government to allow visa holders who returned to India throughout the pandemic to be able to return to their U.S. homes. UPDATE: A 17-year-old River Edge girl and two Bronx teens were all seriously injured when their scooter barreled onto Route 4 and were struck by a passing vehicle, authorities said Sunday.
The trio – including a 15-year-old girl and 16-year-old boy – were headed down Myrtle Avenue in Englewood late Saturday when the scooter hit a traffic island and careened onto the westbound highway, where they were struck by a vehicle, Bergen County Sheriff Anthony Cureton said.
All three were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center.
The most seriously injured was the Bronx girl, who sustained a skull fracture with possible bleeding on the brain, the sheriff said.

ICE detainees at the Bergen County Jail were placed on lockdown Monday after they clashed with corrections officers who discovered contraband, the Sheriff s Office said Friday.
Five detainees were placed on lockdown as a result of the melee and institutionally charged with rioting, refusing orders and possession of unauthorized items. Meanwhile, two others suffered effects from pepper spray, which officers deployed to subdue the crowd, according to a statement from the Sheriff s Office.
“After careful consideration, the incident is under investigation and was forwarded to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office for further review,” Sheriff Anthony Cureton said.
