Where to begin? I came to the University in 1971, looking to design spacecraft.  I quickly learned that my academic strength was mathematics, got an Applied Math degree from the Engineering College, followed by a Master's and Ph.D. from Carnegie-Mellon in Pittsburgh, where my doctoral advisor was a prof I had met (and taken several classes from) at Michigan.
