The U.S. State Department announced Friday that President Biden will appoint a designated Arctic ambassador, a new position for the nation and a sign, officials said, of the administration’s commitment to the region.

Ambassador-at-large to be in contact with 7 other Arctic countries – Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Russia.

The Ambassador-at-Large will be put in place to advance US policy in the northern polar region, a Department of State spokesman said.

President Joe Biden will create a new "ambassador-at-large" position for the Arctic region, an area of growing importance for the United States as Russia increases its presence in the region,

On Friday, Nato chief Jens Stoltenberg warned of the Russian threat in northern polar regions.

Changing Arctic of interest to Biden

A new ambassador position has been created by the Biden administration to handle relations with countries in the Arctic region amid growing tensions with Russia and China.

Due to climate change, the region has garnered interest from the U.S., Russia and China.
