Juneteenth celebrations will be held throughout the St. Louis region as the June 17, 2024 national holiday nears.

The St. Charles County Council tabled the resolution Monday when two of the bill's sponsors failed to show up and others on the council couldn't support it.

The effort is modeled after a similar program to help resettle Afghan refugees here with housing grants, job training, English classes and other resources.

While more than 1.6 million Afghans have fled the country since 2021, the total number in neighboring countries is 8.2 million, underscoring the humanitarian crisis for one of the largest displaced groups in the world. Some now call St. Louis home.
