Despite inflation, the bakery department continues to impress

For a produce department to succeed, freshness is obviously a priority. For Roche Bros., local products help provide that freshness required to keep shoppers coming back. The local angle comes naturally as local is part of Roche Bros.’ DNA.

The more things change the more they stay the same. The first Roche Bros. store opened in 1952 in Roslindale, MA, by brothers Bud and Pat Roche. Even before the first customer walked into the market, Bud and Pat set the policy created by their parents:  treat your customers like members of your own family.

Tom Murray was 16 years old when his professional life started to take shape. He began with Roche Bros. as a part-time employee at the Natick, MA, location with no intention of working in the produce department. “I was picked out of a lineup with three other guys. They threw us into the produce department,” said Murray, who 48 years later is now director of produce for Mansfield, MA-based Roche Bros.

A community being served by a Roche Bros. doesn’t just have a clean, friendly place to shop. The Roche Bros. philosophy has always been to become entrenched in the communities it calls home.

As shoppers walk through almost any supermarket these days, more often than not they are greeted with an unwelcome site — empty shelf space.
