Garfield is being sold to local developer Steve Emerson. He plans to turn this old building into multi-family, market-rate apartments.

A public hearing on the sale and repurposing of the buildings will be held on June 24th, 2024.

A new elementary school is being built in Northeast Cedar Rapids as both arthur and garfield elementary buildings will close at the end of the school year. And

Trailside Elementary will combine the attendance area of Garfield Elementary with Arthur Elementary, starting in the fall of 2024.

Hundreds of people toured Garfield and Arthur elementary schools in northeast Cedar Rapids Saturday morning. The schools are being retired by the Cedar Rapids Community School District at the end of this academic year, and replaced by Trailside Elementary School.
