Sources in Edo Prison in Benin City, south-south Nigeria, have revealed how top prison officials carry out all sorts of illegal activities, like sharing out among themselves welfare materials donated to inmates by non-governmental organisations and religious bodies. SaharaReporters also learnt that such corrupt officials use privileged inmates to attack and brutalise those who challenge them.  

    Some inmates at the Nigerian Correctional Facility in Benin, Imo State have died due to the negligence and corrupt practices of the prison officers, SaharaReporters has learnt. It was gathered that a man identified as Ebenezer, who was awaiting trial, died two weeks ago because his family could not pay the money demanded by prison officials for his treatment.
