Amazon is shutting down its previously free Alexa Guard service in favor of Alexa Emergency Assist, a new paid emergency services feature.

Amazon has announced that it’s shutting down Alexa Guard — a DIY security feature for Echo devices that listens for intruders or household alarms when you’re away from home.

The most notable Alexa Guard feature, the ability to listen for smoke and carbon monoxide detectors or breaking glass, is being folded into the new (and not free) Alexa Emergency Assist.

The company’s new offering is based on Zigbee-based smart bulbs and smart switches that make for easy retrofitting; no new electrical wiring is required.

With Vivint's Smart Lighting offering, users can add security lighting, automations and more to their home, without the need for a rewire.
