As per Sebi norms, mid cap schemes are mandated to invest in companies that are between 101 and 250 in the market capitalisation. These companies can be leaders of tomorrow. Thats what makes them great bets. If these companies live up to the promise, the market will reward the investors handsomely.

Fund managers believe that the regulatory advisory on smallcap funds will not have an impact on the broader markets but will improve transparency in the mutual fund space. However, they suggest that investors be cautious in this space as valuations are not cheap.

Franklin India Prima Fund, the oldest scheme in the mid cap category, failed to beat its respective benchmark in the seven year horizon.

We have selected two schemes from five equity mutual fund categories: aggressive hybrid, large cap, mid cap, small cap and flexi cap schemes. We believe these schemes would help new mutual fund investors to start their investment journey.

Mid cap schemes invest in mid cap stocks or in stocks of medium-sized companies. As per Sebi norms, mid cap schemes are mandated to invest in companies that are between 101 and 250 in market capitalisation.

We have compared the performance of these schemes with their current benchmarks. These schemes are benchmarked against total return index (TRI) currently. Earlier schemes used to use benchmarks convenient to them. Sebi launched TRI based benchmarks in February 2018.

We considered equity categories such as large cap, mid cap, large & mid cap, small cap, ELSS, multi cap, focused funds, flexi cap, value & contra fund categories. We considered regular and growth options.
