There. nobody thought both were going to lose. they both lost. what happened out there this we week? i ask correct you about. that when you look at what happened in election, very often the best judges and analysts are those who are involved. if you talk to senators morse they will tell you you cant ban high magazines with a major manufacturer done the road without people being angry about that. but the background bill had overwhelming support. the reason they stumbled over one being so active i...

The gun culture. they wanted to get four members recalled. they were only able to get two. the turnout was extremely low. they -- the nra and the other forces that were trying to recall the members used other issues like health care and taxes. they didnt even make it an issue as much about guns. and, in fact, the trend, martin -- the good news is, the trend is going exactly in the opposite direction. these are anomalous outlier districts. if you look at whats happening, for example, with red sta...

And your colleague wrote exhaustively about this about how many republicans were in favor of addressing the issue. is there anything out there at all? >> this will bring back some of the bills we saw go down in flames this spring after newtown. and the one that jumps to my mind is the joe manchin and pat toomey background bill that was lost. i spent time in west virginia with joe manchin, his home state where he was taking a lot of heat for the background check bill. it had several mental illnes...

It didnt really matter in our republic. what matters on capitol hill is intensity and longevity of an issue. and the pro-gun people won the fight. what do you think -- kristen, do you think the president is going to have to deal with this today? >> i think he certainly could get a question about this today, chris. specifically, in the context of what his second round is going to look like. remember, when he spoke out after the background check was voted down in the senate, he said, this is just ...

The help that would deal with kind of underlying emotional problem making them so dangerous. >> that is extraordinary important and why we need to talk about mental health challenges more. in new york state, you have gun owners that have mistakenly had their guns seized from them because of mental health problems. we are seeing a real problem with that and that is something that this legislation has to spell out. ed rendell, over the weekend, backers of this legislation picked up support from gu...

How is yours any different? >> like i said, i believe ours is different the way the law was written. both the background bill and the magazine bill is very vague. that is violation of the 14th amendment. the 14th amendment says laws have to be which are and understandable so people know that they are violating them. these laws people wont know. even well-trained law enforcement officers are confused. >> gregg: last question, you are quoted as saying that you are going to refuse to enforce the ne...

True. i was sitting in my office yesterday saying really? the npr -- npr. the nra is not going to score the first major piece of gun legislation to come before the senate since 1994? of course not. the nra soon clarified to senators informing them they are unequivocally opposed to the bill they were helping negotiate. the background bill gets a debate and another up or down vote and the nra will damn sure will scoring that filibuster vote and the final bill itself assuming it gets that far. that...

Unequivocally opposed to the bill they were helping negotiate. the background bill gets a debate and another up or down vote and the nra will damn sure will scoring that filibuster vote and the final bill itself assuming it gets that far. that means the nra is really good at what they do, after working successfully, it would appear with the senators proposing it to weaken the background check proposesal before it ever hit the senate floor leaving impression they would remain neutral once it was ...

Voting for an increase or background bill. so if you object to one part, you can still support the rest of it. that was the strategy at first. the strategy at the committee level, but now that they are past the committee level and on to the next step apparently, a la carte is over and the one bill will not include the ban. so you can fire dozens of rounds. senate democrats are not even going to try. what will be in the bill is still an unanswered question. but democrats arent going to try for a ...
