While the court scrapped the 77 classes for the illegality of reports recommending such classification, the other 37 classes were set aside for non-consultation of the West Bengal Backward Classes Commission

The Calcutta High Court on 22nd May 2024 struck down executive orders relating to the notification of 37 sub-classifications of OBCs and issuance of OBC certificates post the year 2010, in relation to appointments in government services.

According to the new order, the OBC certificate that was issued by the State Government now cannot be used to get any job or any facilities

The judgment will impact a sizeable number of people in the state, according to a lawyer involved in the matter.

The bench directed that the executive orders classifying 42 classes made by the state from March 5, 2010, till May 11, 2012, were also quashed, with prospective effect, given the illegality of the reports recommending such classification

In another crucial verdict ahead of the last two phases of the Lok Sabha polls, the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday cancelled all Other Backward Classes (OBC) certificates issued in West Bengal after 2010.
