BlackRock, the world’s biggest asset manager, said Monday it has appointed Amin Nasser, chief executive of oil giant Saudi Aramco, to its board of directors — despite the New York-based firm’s pledge to accelerate investment in climate-friendly companies.

Nasser joined Saudi Arabias state oil giant as a petroleum engineer in 1982, and decades later in 2019 led Aramcos initial public offering.

His expertise in the Middle East will fill the gap left by Bader Alsaad

Amin Nasser will be represented on the supervisory board in the future, Blackrock announced on Monday. Nasser joined Saudi Arabia's state-owned oil giant in 1982 as a petroleum engineer. In 2015, he was promoted to CEO of the Group and was thus also responsible for the IPO in 2019. He is to replace Bader Alsaad, the chairman of the board of the Arab Fund for Economic & Social Development, who will not stand for re-election in 2024.
