A 1000-litre spill of nitric acid in the Christchurch suburb of Middleton has been contained.

A spokeswoman said more than 1000 litres of the chemical had been spilled. A St John spokesman said five people were treated at the scene and none were taken to hospital. Five people have been injured after a spill thought to have been caused by a forklift puncturing a container of nitric acid.

Fire crews including a command unit are at the scene.
