Another potential reopening suitor, a for-profit system, is also hoping a bankruptcy judge approves its proposed agreement.

When Jesse Lopez was elected to the Board of Supervisors in 1982, “they didn’t believe we won it fair and square,” his son says.

“Bankruptcy cases are more akin to fish than fine wine: They don’t age well,” said a lawyer representing hospital creditors.

“It sends a message to others involved that reopening this hospital is a priority for us,” a county supervisor said.

Fresno-based St. Agnes Medical Center seeks the return of money it loaned to Madera Community Hospital before the smaller hospital closed.
