Senegalese opposition leader Ousmane Sonko was admitted to the intensive care unit of the main hospital in Dakar on the night of 16 to 17 August at the hospital. Sonko, who says he is the subject of a plot to remove him from the presidential election, began a hunger strike on July 30. The presidential camp accuses him of feeding an insurrectional project and of defaming a minister. The confrontation between Sonko and the government has given rise to several episodes of deadly protest.
