Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said his country always prioritises Bangladesh as New Delhi follows neighborhood first policy.
“Strengthening and deepening relations with Bangladesh have been a priority for me from the very first day in office,” he said in his introductory speech in a Bangladesh-India virtual summit.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina led the Bangladesh delegation from her official Ganabhaban residence here while Narendra Modi led the Indian delegation joining the summit online from New Delhi.
Noting that this year has been very challenging due to the global pandemic (Covid-19), Narendra Modi said it is a matter of satisfaction that in this difficult time there has been good cooperation between India and Bangladesh.

The summit is being held a day after Vijay Divas, which marks India s victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war that led to the creation of Bangladesh.
India and Bangladesh have continued to maintain regular exchanges at the highest level with Bangladesh Prime Minister paying an official visit to India in October 2019.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced his visit to Dhaka in March next year to participate in the celebration of 50th Independence Day of Bangladesh. He said this during the virtual summit held on Thursday with his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina.
“I congratulate you on behalf of all Indians on the occasion of Mujib Barsho . Thank you for the invitation to visit Bangladesh next year. It would be a matter of pride for me to pay tribute to Bangabandhu with you,” said Prime Minister Modi.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina today through video conferencing. In this online conference, the two Prime Ministers will announce several steps to give new heights to mutual relations. On this occasion, the two leaders will inaugurate the rail link running before the Bangabandhu-Bapu Digital Exhibition, 1965.
Apart from this, PM Modi and Hasina will issue postage stamps to commemorate the birth centenary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The India-Bangladesh CEO Forum may also be announced to strengthen the IT sector between the two countries. It may be agreed to restore cross-border railway lines.
