The Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) has taken up a project to enhance local salt production so that the country becomes self-reliant in meeting its demand for seasoning.
With just around two weeks left for Eid-ul-Azha, price of unrefined salt has shot up, at least in the wholesale hub of Narayanganj's Nitaiganj, in what appears to be an attempt at cashing in on the upcoming seasonal rise in demand for preserving hides of sacrificial animals.
While salt production has been growing steadily over the years, the farmers in the coastal districts of Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar are apprehensive over whether their meagre profits would get any better.
