It s a measure of how popular the Forth Mountain trails are that within minutes of my arrival I see, in no particular order: families out for a stroll, stern-faced power walkers, fully kitted-out runners, youngsters on BMXs, and two riders on horseback.
Yes, horseback. This is a first. But they are as welcome as all the others, just part of the rhythm and flow of a set of trails which are arguably the most popular in the county.
They re certainly the busiest I ve seen, and even at 11 a.m. on a Sunday morning in winter they are humming with activity. And there are plans to bring more people here, to make the trails more accessible, more amenable, for those currently reluctant to explore their environs.
