The Eastern Cape Human Rights Commission has been forced to subpoena officials from the OR Tambo district municipality and Transnet to an inquiry into the state of the province’s roads, after Transnet and municipal officials were no-shows at a hearing in November.The representatives were forced to appear before the commission in East London on Monday.

Less than two years after Basil Mase was sent by the then Eastern Cape cogta MEC Xolile Nqatha to rescue an ailing OR Tambo district municipality, he has returned as its new municipal manager.

While the Amahlathi municipality’s under-fire administration boss, Ivy Sikhulu-Nqwena, is still locked in a legal battle with her employer over her recent suspension, just a few months before her five-year contract lapses, the troubled council seems to have already moved on and advertised the lucrative municipal manager post.

In the latest turn of events, lawyers representing the OR Tambo district council and speaker Xolile Nkompela have written to newly-appointed administrator Basil Mase instructing him to vacate the municipality’s premises.
