The survey was conducted by the BBC in February and March. It involved approximately 9,000 teachers in England using the Teacher Tapp survey tool.

British Foreign Minister James Cleverly raised the issue of BBC tax searches with India's foreign minister during a bilateral meeting on Wednesday, the minister said in an interview.

"The BBC does not have an agenda – we are driven by purpose. And our first public purpose is to provide impartial news and information to help people understand and engage with the world around them," said Tim Davie.

“We stand up for the BBC, we fund the BBC, we think the BBC World Service is vitally important,” MP David Rutley said in the House of Commons.

While the I-T Department had claimed that the survey – which lasted three days, including overnight – was carried out in such a way that BBC employees could continue to work, an article in BBC Hindi has directly contradicted this.

Without naming BBC, a statement by the finance ministry said that during the course of the survey, the I-T department allegedly gathered evidence 'pertaining to the operation of the organisation which indicate that tax has not been paid on certain remittances...'

The CBDT said the I-T teams unearthed crucial evidence by way of statements of employees, digital proof and documents.

The income tax "survey" at the BBC's Delhi and Mumbai offices ended tonight after nearly three days of officials going through digital records and files.

The news agency PTI said that while there has been no official statement from the UK government on the "survey", sources said they are “closely monitoring" the situation.
