The Idaho Panhandle Avalanche Center released its report Tuesday concerning the Jan. 11 avalanche that stranded two skiers and left a third skier dead near Stevens Peak.

The fatality was the second avalanche death of the 2023–24 winter in the U.S., and the second consecutive day with an avalanche fatality. On Jan. 10, an in-bounds avalanche at Palisades Tahoe resort in California killed one person. And on Sunday one backcountry skier died in an avalanche in Wyomings Prater Canyon, about 34 miles south-southwest of Jackson and near the state line with Idaho.
