The fatality was the second avalanche death of the 2023–24 winter in the U.S., and the second consecutive day with an avalanche fatality. On Jan. 10, an in-bounds avalanche at Palisades Tahoe resort in California killed one person. And on Sunday one backcountry skier died in an avalanche in Wyomings Prater Canyon, about 34 miles south-southwest of Jackson and near the state line with Idaho.
