Berkowitz Building News Today

After decades as an eyesore looming over New Britain's Main Street between Little Poland and downtown, the Berkowitz Building is on the verge of accepting tenants following a multimillion-dollar remodeling.

The city of New Britain has sold four parcels of land adjacent to the Berkowitz Building that will be used to build additional mixed-use apartment properties as part of a broader redevelopment plan. The city this month sold 0.64 acres at 634, 666, 676, and 686 Main St., to developer Douglas Bromfield, who is currently in the process of redeveloping the nearby Berkowitz Building into a 24-unit, mixed-use apartment complex. 

The state is providing about $1.3 million to cleanup the contaminated land around the vacant Polar Corp. building downtown so the owner can convert it into more than 60 apartments.
