ENGIE is pleased to announce that it has reached commercial close for two solar photovoltaic power plants under Bid Window Five (BW5) of South Africa's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP).

Eastern Cape premier Oscar Mabuyane has hailed a R3bn investment for renewable energy infrastructure announced by minerals & energy minister Gwede Mantashe on Thursday as a much-needed boost for the province. Mabuyane was speaking shortly after Mantashe made the announcement on Thursday at the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme signing in Centurion.

However, he said he could not yet provide a timeframe for the publication of the update or indicate what process would be followed.

News that the 25 solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind projects selected late last year as preferred bids would not achieve financial close by the end of April as advertised came as no surprise. There had been murmurings about difficulties in the run-up to the deadline and a precedent for a delay had already been set by the far more controversial Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (RMIPPPP), financial close for which having been shifted four times.
