6 Local Eateries Bringing Japanese Cuisine to the First State

Japanese flavors spring to the forefront of Delaware’s dining scene as these six local eateries practice the Land of the Rising Sun cuisine.
When Robert Lhulier isn’t in the kitchen, the private chef bellies up to the sushi bar at Takumi in North Wilmington, where sushi chef Hideyuki Okubo prepares an amuse-bouche, a paper-thin slice of pearlescent flounder folded around a shiso leaf, served with ponzu sauce and fresh ginger.
“
Takumi means ‘artisan’ in Japanese, and that’s what Chef Hideyuki is,” Lhulier says. “He has put out beautiful, fresh sushi and sashimi for over 20 years.”

There will be a new restaurant coming to downtown Lewes later this year. Megan Kee, who owns and operates three other restaurants in Rehoboth Beach, plans to open a new eatery in the longtime location of The Buttery at the corner of Savannah Road and Second Street. The building, known as the Trader Mansion, was most recently occupied by 2nd Street Tavern.

A new restaurant will be coming to downtown Lewes later this year. Megan Kee, who owns and operates three other restaurants in Rehoboth Beach, plans to open a new eatery in the longtime location of The Buttery at the corner of Savannah Road and Second Street. The building, known as the Trader Mansion, was most recently occupied by 2nd Street Tavern.

Striper Bites, a staple restaurant in downtown Lewes for the last 20 years, will soon become property of the Big Fish Restaurant Group.
Big Fish President and Managing Partner Eric Sugrue confirmed during an interview March 8 that his group will be taking over the Savannah Road restaurant, which was opened by Matt and Ali DiSabatino in the summer of 2001.
“Matt and I have been friends for a long time,” Sugrue said. “This whole deal happened in a friendly way. We met behind closed doors for well over a month and we worked it out. He decided to start a new chapter in his life, so he was looking for somebody to continue the legacy.”

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of hearing longtime beach bartender and restaurateur Matt Sprenkle on a (brilliantly produced…) radio show. Turns out that Matt’s first job after graduating high school was working at Funland in Rehoboth Beach while he commuted back and forth to college. After three years on the Boardwalk, Matt signed on with Summer House owners Susan and Richard Krick to be the bouncer. (Their 23 years of ownership there is another great RB story.)
