E.coli bacterium is being used to detect buried landmines by sensing trace amounts of a chemical that leaks out of the buried explosives.

Researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, in collaboration with bioproduction platform company Enzymit, developed a protein-based biosensor.

As part of the method, biosensors based on E. coli are dispersed over the target area, where they sniff out the chemical signature of buried explosives and become luminescent.
