Boss Mick McCarthy says new signing Darren Ambrose’s ability was no shock to him but that he was surprised that the 30-year-old was in a position where he needed to join the Blues on trial. Yesterday, the former academy player signed a short-term deal until January.

Town have confirmed that midfielder Jay Tabb’s contract has been extended for a further year.

Town boss Mick McCarthy admits that he has been surprised by striker Brett Pitman’s technical ability and has praised the summer signing from Bournemouth for his selfless approach to the game.

Town will face East Anglian rivals Norwich City in the Championship play-off semi-finals after a 3-2 defeat at Blackburn and results elsewhere saw the Blues finish sixth. Smith put Town in front in the 31st minute, Murphy added the second just before the hour and McGoldrick, who earlier had hit both posts and the bar, netted the third in the final minute.

After an evenly balanced first half in which the home side had the better opportunities, the Blues - who had scored in each of their last 16 games - were on top for much of the second period with Jay Tabb twice going close to breaking the deadlock.

Two Britt Assombalonga goals, the first after 17 seconds, the fastest in the Championship this season, and the second in first-half injury time, saw Nottingham Forest to a 2-0 victory over the Blues at Portman Road, their first away win of the season. Town huffed and puffed as they looked for a way back into the game in the second half but never seriously threatened a resolute Forest backline.
